A coalition dedicated to supporting young minds across Texas.
The Texas Youth Mental Health Network Coalition is a collaborative effort dedicated to improving the mental well-being of young people across Texas. Our mission is to equip youth with the tools, support, and resources needed to navigate life’s challenges through mental health education, mentorship, life skills training, and leadership development. As part of The Texas Youth Action Network (TYAN) at Texas A&M, we work alongside community organizations, educators, and mentors to create a holistic support system for youth. TYAN provides research-backed strategies, training, and statewide collaboration opportunities, allowing our coalition to implement evidence-based mental health initiatives tailored to the unique needs of Texas youth. Through this partnership, we strive to empower young people to build resilience, foster emotional intelligence, and thrive in their personal and academic lives—ensuring that mental wellness remains a central focus in youth development.

Navigating mental health can be challenging, whether you’re a youth seeking help or an educator or mentor supporting others. Our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section provides straightforward answers to common questions:
If you often feel sad, anxious, or irritable, have trouble sleeping, struggle to focus, lose interest in things you once enjoyed, or experience overwhelming thoughts, these could be signs of
mental health challenges. It’s important to check in with yourself and seek support if these feelings persist.
Start by acknowledging your feelings and practicing healthy coping strategies like deep breathing, journaling, or engaging in activities you enjoy. Talking to a trusted friend, family
member, teacher, or school counselor can also provide relief. If stress becomes unmanageable,
seeking professional support is a positive step.
If speaking with your parents feels difficult, consider reaching out to a teacher, school counselor, mentor, coach, or another trusted adult. Many schools and community organizations also offer
mental health support services. Online or text-based mental health helplines can be a good
alternative if you prefer more privacy.
Changes in mood, behavior, appetite, or sleep patterns can indicate a struggle. Look for
withdrawal from friends and activities, a drop in academic performance, increased irritability, or
expressions of sadness or hopelessness. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, it’s worth
addressing
Listen with empathy and without judgment. Validate their feelings by saying, “I hear you,” or “It’s
okay to feel this way.” Encourage open dialogue and help them explore coping strategies. If
sadness or anxiety persists, consider seeking support from a therapist or counselor.
Create a safe, nonjudgmental space for conversations about mental health. Encourage healthy
habits like regular sleep, exercise, and time for relaxation. Let your child know they don’t have to
go through challenges alone and reassure them that seeking help is a sign of strength.
Normalize mental health discussions in the classroom by incorporating wellness check-ins,
practicing active listening, and fostering a culture of kindness. Avoid stigma by using positive
language and modeling self-care strategies.
Approach them with empathy and curiosity rather than judgment. Privately express concern and
offer to listen. Encourage small, manageable coping strategies and refer them to school
counselors or mental health professionals when needed.
Know your school's mental health resources and local support services. Share hotline numbers,
counseling options, and online mental health resources. When appropriate, facilitate
conversations between students and school counselors or social workers.
